CONCOURSE E AT DULLES INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES“ TOPPING OUT” MILESTONE
Dulles International installed the final steel beam for the newest concourse, Concourse E, in mid-July. The new concourse can accommodate up to seven large airplanes or 14 smaller planes at once, or a mix of both. Construction started in 2024, with the concourse scheduled to open in fall 2026.
“ Our airlines are telling us they have plenty of people who want to fly in and out of the region, and Dulles is the obvious place to go,” said Richard Golinowski, Airports Authority Vice President and manager of Dulles International.“ We had 27 million people travel through the airport last year, and that is only expected to increase. United has been a fantastic partner in our growth.”
Over 400 construction workers and an additional 100 supervisory staff work at the site daily. During the“ topping out” ceremony, executives and workers had the chance to sign the steel beam before it was lifted into place. Turner Construction hosted a lunch at the construction site, including a mariachi band, to thank those involved for their hard work and dedication to the project.
“ We appreciate our partnership with the Airports Authority and PGAL, but most importantly, we appreciate each and every one of you,” said Darien Grant, Vice President and general manager for Turner Construction, to the workers in attendance.“ Thank you for showing up, whether it is snowing, raining, or 100 degrees. You are building the gateway of future travel for all our families.”
Concourse E will be a 435,000-square-foot facility with 17 concessions and will be fully occupied by United Airlines, providing direct access to the AeroTrain. Project planners aim for a LEED BD + C v4 Silver certification, and the air handling systems will include highefficiency recovery technology. The HVAC system will utilize outside natural air within the conditioned air systems. The construction team is sourcing materials from the local environment to meet environmental stewardship and sustainability goals. Electric vehicle charging stations for general-use vehicles and ground servicing equipment will also be installed. Concourse E is the first phase of the expansion plans for Dulles International.
