BUKOM
Named for the bustling Bukom Square in Accra, Ghana, this lively West African restaurant has been a popular spot for West African cuisine since 1992. Dishes from the entire Gold Coast region shine brightly, including those from Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, and Nigeria. Look for chargrilled chicken skewers coated with chichinga spice and ground peanuts, egusi( pounded melon seeds with spinach and palm oil) served over tender slabs of goat or fish, tongue-tingling pepper soup, and the essential jollof rice. Be sure to order a side of fried plantains, the diaspora’ s version of French fries. If you’ re in the mood for a drink, the vibrant cocktails are strong and flavorful, like the sorrel-infused Afropolitan with vodka and Cointreau, and the colorful Bob Marley shot with Galliano, green crème de menthe, and Bacardi 151. Many nights, your experience will be accompanied by live reggae music, including performances by Grammynominated drummer Paapa Nyarkoh, whose tunes blend West African rhythms, reggae vibes, and calypso beats. 2442 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009,( 202) 265-4600
