BIKEEP COMES TO REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT

DONATE

DON ’ T DISCARD

The Airports Authority ’ s “ Donate , Don ’ t Discard ” campaign aims to reduce waste by encouraging the recycling , reuse , and repurposing of items from Airports Authority operations . Since the program ’ s implementation , the Airports Authority has donated 2,900 items and diverted more than 1,380 pounds of waste from landfills .
“ We have an excess amount of waste that was going to landfills and a lot of products that we were seeing tossed out ,” said Courtnie Gore , a social impact specialist with the Airports Authority .
In April 2024 , the Airports Authority began the pilot Toiletry Donation Program at Reagan National Airport . A team led by the Office of Diversity , Inclusion , and Social Impact collected gently used and unopened toiletries over the 3.4-ounce TSA limit at Terminal 2 security checkpoints to divert them from municipal waste disposal . The items were then donated to a community organization , shelter , or non-profit for distribution to those in need .
With the record increase in airport travelers , the number of hygiene items collected continues to grow . In July , the effort yielded the highest collection yet , with over 525 pounds of waste diverted from landfills and
890 items donated to the Northwest Community Food Pantry . The pantry serves approximately 200 needy families each week with food , cleaning supplies , and hygiene items .
“ For staff and volunteers , it ’ s fun and exciting , and it ’ s prideful to be able to provide these products . To the extent we had toiletries before , they often came from the dollar store , and we had lower quality and quantity ,” said Kristina Filipovich with Northwest Community Food . “ It ’ s wonderful to provide these brand-name and full-size products . They ’ re brands that people love and get excited about .”
