When the crisp air of autumn arrives in the nation ’ s capital , Washingtonians head for the hills . After all , what better way to experience fall color than by venturing to the lush slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains ?
Two words : Add wine .
The Washington area boasts spectacular fall foliage . It also has a growing winery scene . Virginia had 300 or so at last count . Maryland hosts about 100 . And many are located close enough to D . C . to accomplish those viable fall day trip-destinations that pair winetasting and leaf-peeping .
( We ’ ll add the obvious advice here to appoint a designated driver .) Below are our suggestions for sipping a glass of local vino and immersing in fall color .
