17TH STREET FESTIVAL
August 24
17th Street NW from P Street to R Street, NW
“Small but mighty” is the description of this festival that celebrates
the 17th Street-Dupont Circle neighborhood and its diversity of
people — as well as bistros, bars, boutiques, museums, and non-
profits. Along the street, 100 vendors and more than 60 artists and
craftsmen sell everything from fine art to jewelry, ceramics to crafts,
and lots more in between. They are joined by plenty of live funk and
New Orleans jazz music, flamenco dancers, drag queens, and more.
A kids’ zone adds an inflatable slide, snow cones, face painting, and
games throughout the day. 17thstreetfestival.org
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL
August 31
Walter E. Washington Convention Center
For bookworms, it rarely gets better than this annual literary
festival thrown by the Library of Congress. More than 100 authors,
poets, and illustrators of all genres — including, in 2019, Ruth Bader
Ginsburg and Henry Louis Gates Jr., among others — share their
craft in presentations, talks, signings, and panels. The lower level of
the convention center is particularly family friendly, with activities,
programs, and stages for children, as well as trivia games, an
interactive photo booth, and a virtual reality experience. loc.gov
