D . C . -based Compass Coffee is an open , industrial cafe and roaster with artisanal brews , pastries , sandwiches , and more . With incredible flavor offerings including The Maple Latte , Nutella Mocha , and a Mint Julep Cold Brew , fans of Compass have been loyal since its establishment in 2014 . Since then , owners Michael Haft and Harrison Suarez have gone on to open five total locations in the D . C . area . Haft and Suarez , both native Washingtonians , decided to begin the company following their return to the city after leaving active duty in the Marine Corps . This Shaw staple keeps the city awake and with enough energy to take on the hustle and bustle of a day in the Capital .
