This free festival showcases an array of events and disciplines . It assembles artists , crafts people , musicians , scientists and chefs . Imbibe on the food , sounds and colors of Latino culture as you meander through the festival . Be ready to dance , sing and eat all day long !
Throughout the month , there are extraordinary events and activities held throughout the city at the National Museum of American History , the Library of Congress , the Smithsonian and the National Museum of the American Indian . Last year , Latinidad Festival at the National Museum of American history celebrated women of Afro-Latina decent and their contributions to American History . There were performances by DJ Maracuyeah and Crystal Roman . It is likely
talent of the same or better will return .
Nearing the end of the month , on October 14 at 10 a . m ., hosted by the Smithsonian and held at the Anacostia Community Museum , there will be a special event entitled Artist Studio Tour : Hola Artistas ! This is a celebration of the exhibition Gateways . The term is used for the exhibition as a metaphor to emphasize the points of access into a community . The ‘ gateways ’ are thematically infused into the structure of this issue-based exhibit . The tribute will be a tour , which shuttles visitors to the homes and studios of community artists .
The Anacostia Community Museum will provide a free shuttle for the tour , which includes a visit with Wilfredo Valladares ’ and Arte Studio 28 . Valladres was born in Honduras ,
Central America , but had to seek political asylum in the early 1990s . He works in public art , sculpture and mixed media , but is most known for his Journey Anacostia sculpture and mural project on 1201 Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King , Jr . Ave ., SE .
Nicaraguan born artist Luis Peralta Del Valle , who is a graffiti muralist , painter , and visual artist , and the winner of several major awards , including being a finalist for the District of Columbia 28th , will be part of the tour along with poet , visual artist and educator , Samuel Miranda .
