This free festival showcases an array of events and disciplines. It assembles artists, crafts people, musicians, scientists and chefs. Imbibe on the food, sounds and colors of Latino culture as you meander through the festival. Be ready to dance, sing and eat all day long!
Throughout the month, there are extraordinary events and activities held throughout the city at the National Museum of American History, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian and the National Museum of the American Indian. Last year, Latinidad Festival at the National Museum of American history celebrated women of Afro-Latina decent and their contributions to American History. There were performances by DJ Maracuyeah and Crystal Roman. It is likely
talent of the same or better will return.
Nearing the end of the month, on October 14 at 10 a. m., hosted by the Smithsonian and held at the Anacostia Community Museum, there will be a special event entitled Artist Studio Tour: Hola Artistas! This is a celebration of the exhibition Gateways. The term is used for the exhibition as a metaphor to emphasize the points of access into a community. The‘ gateways’ are thematically infused into the structure of this issue-based exhibit. The tribute will be a tour, which shuttles visitors to the homes and studios of community artists.
The Anacostia Community Museum will provide a free shuttle for the tour, which includes a visit with Wilfredo Valladares’ and Arte Studio 28. Valladres was born in Honduras,
Central America, but had to seek political asylum in the early 1990s. He works in public art, sculpture and mixed media, but is most known for his Journey Anacostia sculpture and mural project on 1201 Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., SE.
Nicaraguan born artist Luis Peralta Del Valle, who is a graffiti muralist, painter, and visual artist, and the winner of several major awards, including being a finalist for the District of Columbia 28th, will be part of the tour along with poet, visual artist and educator, Samuel Miranda. Because space is limited, sign up ahead of time.
