Welcome to America’ s National Capital Region.
This fall and winter, we are pleased to welcome you through Reagan National and Dulles International airports. This issue of FlyWashington looks outward to a remarkable range of destinations, while also highlighting the connections between the National Capital Region and communities around the world.
Our cover story explores the many different experiences travelers can discover across Africa. From Casablanca and Cairo to Accra, Lomé, Lagos, Addis Ababa and Cape Town, each destination offers its own history, culture, landscapes and traditions. With nonstop service from Dulles International to all seven cities, these journeys are more accessible than ever for travelers beginning in the National Capital Region.
Closer to home, we explore the strong ties between Africa and our region. Little Ethiopia remains an important part of Washington’ s cultural landscape, while Silver Spring has become home to a growing collection of African restaurants, businesses and traditions. Throughout the DMV, festivals, food, music, fashion and community events continue to reflect the breadth of the African diaspora.
We also travel to Cartagena, where new nonstop service from Dulles begins this December, and visit Owensboro and Las Vegas to discover experiences beyond the places travelers may already know.
At Dulles International, this season also marks the beginning of an important new chapter. Concourse E, the first new concourse at Dulles in more than two decades, will add 14 gates, direct AeroTrain access and spacious new passenger areas with natural light, upgraded amenities and new dining and shopping options. Local favorites including Ellie Bird, Aventino, Honor Brewing, Good Company Doughnuts & Cafe and MurLarkey Distilled Spirits will help give travelers a stronger sense of the region as soon as they arrive.
Concourse E is also an early step in our broader IAD Global Gateway vision for Dulles. This long-term transformation will preserve the iconic architecture of Eero Saarinen’ s Main Terminal while modernizing and expanding the airport for the future. Planned improvements include new and updated concourses, better connections throughout the airport, expanded passenger facilities and investments designed to support continued growth in domestic and international travel.
There is a great deal ahead for Dulles, and we are excited for travelers to begin experiencing that progress. The goal remains simple: to make every journey more comfortable, more efficient and better connected to the National Capital Region and the world beyond it.
Wherever your travels take you this fall and winter, thank you for choosing Reagan National and Dulles International airports.
We wish you safe and enjoyable travels this season.
Warm regards,
Chryssa Westerlund Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority
