EXPLORING LAS VEGAS THROUGH A LOCAL’ S LENS
EXPLORING LAS VEGAS THROUGH A LOCAL’ S LENS
Las Vegas may be synonymous with the Strip, but locals know the city extends far beyond its casinos and glowing neon signs. With multiple nonstop flights between Reagan National and Dulles International to Las Vegas, it’ s easier than ever to visit Vegas. Venture into the neighborhoods around Las Vegas Boulevard, and you’ ll find independent restaurants, active artists, community markets and desert trails. We asked locals where they go to experience a side of the city visitors might otherwise miss.
FIRST FRIDAYS IN THE ARTS DISTRICT
Just a few minutes north of the Strip, the 18b Arts District offers a different kind of Las Vegas experience. Once an industrial area of warehouses and commercial buildings, the neighborhood has transformed into a creative hub featuring galleries, artist studios, vintage shops, restaurants, bars, and colorful murals.
The best-known event is First Friday, the monthly arts and culture festival that draws artists, musicians, food vendors, and crowds to the neighborhood. But Corey Fagan, executive director of the First Friday Foundation, says visitors shouldn’ t wait for the festival to explore the district.“ Some of my favorite restaurants in the Arts District include Main Street Provisions, Echo, and Bar Boheme, just to name a few,” Fagan says.
something more leisurely, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park pairs walking trails and mountain scenery with the historic ranch that gives the park its name. Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs offers an even gentler escape, with tree-shaded lawns, ponds, and walking paths that can feel worlds away from the Strip.
For a different side of the desert, Elizabeth Bickmore, senior management analyst at Clark County Wetlands Park, recommends exploring the trails that wind through the park’ s desert and wetland habitats along the Las Vegas Wash. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, and fall and winter offer some of the best birdwatching. From October through March, migrating birds join the park’ s year-round residents, including the majestic American white pelican.
The Strip may command the spotlight, but Las Vegas doesn’ t end where the casinos do. Its neighborhoods, creative spaces, and desert landscapes offer a fuller picture of a city with far more to explore.

SOUTHWEST FLAVOR
To get a taste of what locals know, head southwest of the Strip, where independent restaurants, bakeries, and neighborhood gathering spots showcase the city’ s increasingly diverse food scene. Chef Kimmie McIntosh, the talent behind the James Beardrecognized Filipino bakeshop MILKFISH, considers this part of town one of her favorite places to eat and explore.
“ Fukuburger prepares outstanding American burgers with a Japanese twist here,” McIntosh says.“ They have a huge patio shared with Suzuya Patisserie, an incredible Japanese-French bakery with excellent crepes.” Make a meal of both: Start with one of Fukuburger’ s Japanese-inspired burgers, then head next door to Suzuya for a pastry, crepe or dessert. Continue exploring the neighborhood at UnCommons, a mixed-use district with restaurants, shops and places to gather.
McIntosh particularly recommends visiting when Market in the Alley pops up at UnCommons. The monthly night market brings together dozens of local makers, artists and small businesses.
INTO THE OUTDOORS
Las Vegas sits amid a surprisingly diverse desert landscape of rugged mountains, wetlands, springs and miles of hiking trails. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area may be the region’ s bestknown outdoor escape, but locals have plenty of other places to disappear into nature.
For sweeping views of the Las Vegas Valley, experienced hikers can tackle Frenchman Mountain, a steep climb east of the city that rewards the effort with panoramas spanning the valley. For
