Dulles International was built farther from the city to allow room for future expansion and longer runways capable of handling bigger planes. A dedicated roadway connected the airport to Washington, and revenue from the corridor later helped fund the Metrorail Silver Line, which officially reached the airport in 2022.
This year, Dulles International is preparing to unveil another expansion, which includes the opening of Concourse E featuring 15 new retailers and a 40,000-square-foot United Airlines club, the largest United club in its network.

AMERICA’ S CONTINUING LEGACY IN FLIGHT
As the U. S. celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence, Dulles International is illuminated in red, white, and blue along the terminals and exterior. Look out for the patriotic display when you arrive or depart. This year also marks Reagan National’ s 85 years of operation, with festivities for passengers on the 85th flight, which took place on June 16. Passengers enjoyed giveaways, and a staff luncheon honored nearly a century of service. Be sure to watch for next year’ s celebrations when Dulles International marks its 65th anniversary— more festivities are planned!
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall houses many of the world’ s most famous aircraft and spacecraft, while the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles International displays iconic artifacts such as the Space Shuttle Discovery and the Enola Gay.
In nearby Maryland, the College Park Aviation Museum preserves another major chapter of aviation history at the world’ s oldest continuously operating airport. The museum also highlights the Columbia Air Center, the nation’ s first licensed Black-owned and operated airport.
Together, these institutions help preserve the story of aviation’ s growth and the people who shaped it.
