The Minute Man statue resides on the west bank, not far from the gravesites of slain British soldiers. Nearby, the Buckman Tavern, a key militia meeting place, offers insights into the Battle of Lexington and colonial life in 1775. The Hancock-Clarke House, where Paul Revere warned Samuel Adams about the British troop movements, also offers guided tours and exhibits.
The 5-mile Battle Road Trail offers an excellent opportunity to experience the bucolic New England landscape while following much of the same route taken by the Colonial Militia and British Regulars on April 19, 1775. The trail also traverses fields and wetlands where several skirmishes took place.
Concord also plays a significant role in America’ s literary and cultural history. The Wayside: Home of Authors is a museum in the former residence of Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne, as well as other notable scholars. The home, frequently visited by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, is considered a cauldron of the Transcendentalism Movement and other intellectual touchstones of 19th-century America.
The Alcott family also harbored enslaved people as part of the Underground Railroad. Walden Pond, where Thoreau famously spent two years, two months, and two days in his DIY cabin, is located two miles away. Thoreau’ s cabin no longer exists; however, its location is marked by a cairn of stacked stones.
BOSTON 250
Through the end of 2026, Boston 250 continues to commemorate the city’ s Revolutionary legacy with exhibitions, reenactments, and educational programming.
Highlights include Revolution! 250 Years of Art & Activism in Boston at the Boston Public Library, special Freedom Trail tours led by National Park rangers, and anniversary events at Faneuil Hall.
Commemorations of the Siege of Boston, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and Evacuation Day feature recreated town meetings, harbor storytelling sessions, and programs marking the British evacuation of Boston Harbor as troops sailed back to England.
Together, these sites offer far more than a history lesson. They reveal how ideas about liberty, representation, and civic engagement were forged in New England and continue to shape the nation today. Whether you follow the Freedom Trail through downtown Boston or venture to Lexington, Concord, and Cambridge, Revolutionary Boston provides a compelling journey through the people, places, and events that changed the course of history.
