Many of these greens and commons later played significant roles in the American Revolution, serving as gathering places for public debate and civic action. One of the most famous is Lexington Green, where 77 militia members led by Captain John Parker confronted 700 British Redcoats on April 19, 1775. Although no one knows who fired the first“ shot heard round the world,” the Revolutionary War had begun.
