EAC-EU trade talks could be concluded by May
The ongoing EAC EU Economic Partnership
Agreement negotiations could be concluded by the
end of May, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Principal
Secretary Eng. Karanja Kibicho has said adding that
the number of contentious issues have been reduced
to three. They include issues on governance, export
taxes, subsidies and domestic support.
The EAC region has a tangible opportunity to seize
the advantages offered by the EPA and to maintain
Duty Free Quota Free access for all Kenyan exports
to the 500 million consumer EU market. The
East African nation stands to benefit from foreign
exchange earnings, employment opportunities and
penetration to the European Union market with
EPAs.
The Kenyan Government is committed to ensure
that the negotiations are concluded by the
Ministerial Council meeting expected to happen by
mid-May 2014.

Kenya is recognized as a leader in flower exports by AfDB
The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently
released its annual report for 2013 in which Kenya
was recognized as the leading exporter of cut
flowers to the European Union with a market share
of about 38 percent.
The report recognized the contribution of Kenya’s
cut-flower industry to the country’s economy
through foreign exchange earnings and employment
creation. The sector has also attracted other
investors dealing in other inputs such greenhouses,
machinery, irrigation systems, and in cold storage
facilities.
Approximately 65 per cent of Kenya’s flower
exports are sold through Dutch auctions to the
United Kingdom, Japan, USA, Russia, France and
Germany.
The cut-flower Industry associations in the
country have played an important role towards
self-regulation and the introduction of codes of
practice which are benchmarked to international
best practices. This has provided an enabling
environment for the development of the sector.
