Augustine , the Father Miguel O ’ Reilly House Museum is located south of the Plaza . The Museum has three main themes : the story of the house , which was constructed in 1691 ; the Catholic tradition in St . Augustine , which began on September 8 , 1565 ; and the Sisters of St . Joseph who have been guardians of the O ’ Reilly House and educators in St . Augustine since 1866 . The Museum is free of charge and open Wednesdays – Saturdays from 10 a . m . to 3 p . m .
Fort Matanzas National Monument

In 1740 , the Spanish built Fort Matanzas here , a small fortified watchtower that guarded the southern entrance to St . Augustine . The site offers nature trails and a free ferry to the fort .

Loved , loved , loved this tour ! History made fun and interactive . Several demonstrations of life in early St . Augustine . Learned so much and had a great time too . Our tour guide was in period dress and took pride in getting into the role . We will go back on our next visit .

My kids loved it ! My youngest son got to light a 3lb cannon ! My middle child declared that he wanted to become a blacksmith and forge his own knives . All of my kids got a kick out of this tour . Very informative !
