The oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S.,
it was built (1672-1695) to protect the town
and the treasure fleets on their way home
to Spain. It features daily demonstrations of

The former Hotel Ponce de Leon—the famous
luxury resort built by Henry Flagler in 1887 with
magnificent displays of Tiffany stained-glass

On this site in 1565, the Spanish killed 245 French
Huguenots in a struggle over control of Florida.
In 1740, the Spanish built Fort Matanzas here,
a small-fortified watchtower that guarded the
southern entrance to St. Augustine. The site offers
nature trails and a free ferry to the fort.

The first free African settlement in North America.
Although nothing remains of the fort, the site and
visitor center memorialize the slaves who fled the
American colonies to find freedom in Spanish
Florida.

The Government House is now hosting the
brand-new First Colony exhibit, a high-tech and
highly interactive exhibition that explores the
origins of St. Augustine and our roots in Spanish
colonial history. Inside visitors will discover real
artifacts collected through years of archaeological
exploration in St. Augustine, incredible interactive
software that allows you to explore a full 3D
rendering of the first Spanish settlement, as well
as the story of the true First Thanksgiving, which
occurred in St. Augustine decades before the
Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Experience Florida’s Smithsonian. The former
Alcazar Hotel, built in 1888 by Henry Flagler,

city. The museum complex, owned and operated
by the St. Augustine Historical Society, includes

the schoolmaster and pupils to see what school
life was like in the 1700s. Compare your school
days to those of the old days. The school house is
more than 200 years old and made of red cedar
and cypress.
