Florida Ag in the Classroom Reached 274,000 Students in 2012

School gardens , grant money and the Agriculture Literacy Day reading program helped Florida Agriculture in the Classroom ( FAITC ) reach nearly 12,000 teachers and more than 274,000 students in the past year .
The non-profit group , based in Gainesville , continued to distribute its popular school garden curriculum , Gardening for Grades , through online orders and teacher workshops .
“ We ’ re pleased teachers are finding our materials , grants and other programs useful as they use agricultural concepts to teach language , math , science , social studies and other subject areas ,” said Ken Barton , chairman of Florida Agriculture in the Classroom and executive director of the Florida Peanut Producers Association .
More than 7,600 teachers and 150,000 students participated in the organization ’ s school garden curriculum and mini-grant program . FAITC trained 750 teachers and volunteers at its professional development workshops . In addition , volunteers visited 3,100 classrooms and 78,000 elementary students with the Florida Agriculture Literacy Day reading program and the book , Healthy Florida Farms .
