Understanding Spoon

Fishing Lures

What is a Spoon Fishing Lure

A spoon fishing lure is a simple yet highly effective type of lure that has been a staple in anglers' tackle boxes for decades. Personally this is not the type of fishing I have done much in the past so it is good to learn new techniques, so let’s learn together.  Named for its resemblance to a spoon, this lure typically consists of a concave, oblong piece of metal that reflects light and mimics the erratic movement of a wounded baitfish. The spoon's shape creates a wobbling or fluttering action as it moves through the water, which triggers predatory fish to strike.

Spoon lures come in various sizes, colors, and finishes, allowing them to be used in different fishing environments and to target a wide range of species, including bass, pike, trout, and saltwater species like mackerel and striped bass.

Techniques for Using a Spoon Lure

Straight Retrieve

Technique: Cast the spoon out and retrieve it at a steady pace. The natural wobble of the spoon will mimic a fleeing baitfish, attracting predators.

Best For: This technique is effective when fish are actively feeding and willing to chase after fast-moving prey. It works well in open water and over submerged structures where fish might be holding.

Lift and Drop (Yo-Yo)

Technique: After casting, allow the spoon to sink to the desired depth. Lift your rod tip sharply, then let the spoon fall back down on a slackline. The spoon will flutter as it sinks, resembling an injured or dying fish.

Best For: This technique is ideal for targeting fish that are holding near the bottom or in deeper water. The fluttering action on the drop often triggers strikes from less aggressive fish.
