I am obsessed with the butt …. the butt section of the rod I am fishing with. I like a long full butt section or even a split grip butt section is nice. But all joking aside is the butt section just as important as the rest of the rod. The long and short of it is NO but for personnel comfort the butt section can be very important. So I think we all understand the length of the butt section can be helpful in fighting your fish. So let's talk pros and cons of the Full Grip Butt Section VS the Split Grip Butt Section.

We will start with the

long full grip butt section.

For me the longer full grip

butt section provided that

extra leverage against my

forearm as I fight bigger fish.

The Full grip Butt section also provides more control when fishing with heavier rods in open water. I believe the Full Grip Butt Section is a great fulcrum setup and allows you to tier your fish out faster and helps you last longer in the fight. Consequently you cannot go too long with the butt section because if you go too long (ie.. past your elbow) it will get caught up in clothing as well as the pockets on your float tube.

Over the years the Full Grip Butt Section rod as we were discussing above have become harder to find.  Companies have moved to the Split Grip butt sections, but why?  The reason is they can save on material which leads to a lower cost of the rod.  It also
