Catch and Release

of a

Halibut

Let's look at the net itself. As explained you should not use nets that are knotted to create their netting. This is a definite no go as it will split those tails. Instead if you are netting a halibut it should be with a non knotted netting material (ie..rubber nets). The size of the mesh does not matter just NO KNOT'S.

It is also explained that for short Halibuts you should hold the fish by calming down gently on the gill plate as you remove the hook. They also say if it is very small try not to touch it at all. If you handle it please be sure to wet your hands, net, and or towel if you are using one to handle your fish. Also explained NEVER come in contact with their gill plate.

Also which is better: Lip Gripper or Boga Grips. Now this is my opinion but I think the Boga Grips are better. There is less material in contact with the fish's mouth and the gap is wider than the Lip Grippers. I feel and have seen fish teeth getting chipped or broken as they are clamped down over the jaw of the fish. All in all I believe that we all do what is best for our catch, but sometimes we just need to review our habits and be willing to change when it means a safer catch and release of our next Halibut we catch.
