Video Games vs. Academics

While videogames itself do not directly affect grades, too much video games can affect study habits. Lets imagine a student studying math. Whenever the student plays a video game his math proficiency does not decrease. However, the time he spends playing games actually lessen his time for studying.

Our study shows that students have a mixed belief regarding the effect of video games on their academics. 27 students think that their academic performance is affected by playing video games while 30 students do not think that there academics will be affected by playing video games. Considering that there are a lot of factors that contribute to academic performance, students that have difficulties are not usually video game addicts. According to our survey, DLSU students think that lack of sleep and procrastination affects their academic performance the most. Lack of sleep can be caused by many things besides video games. A student may have unhealthy sleeping habits because of heavy drinking, cramming schoolwork, late night reading or insomnia. When asked what videogames are to them, the majority of the students said that it is just a pastime for them.

To sum it up, video games isn’t necessarily bad for your academics. If you think that you can handle balancing schoolwork and shooting bad guys, why stop? However, if you think your grades are going down, you should sit down and think of the things that can be causing it. If you play 10 hours of video games a day, lessen it. If you’re too drunk to do anything productive, sober up.
