Mental chatter is that voice in
your head that never gives you a
moment of peace. We all have it,
but the question is, do you
believe what this voice tells you?
Have you ever questioned that it
wasn’t right?
Our suffering comes when we
believe that we are our thoughts
and that our thoughts are
correct. Actually, this chatter is
more like a know-it-all co-worker, or even a whiny child.
What if instead of clinging on to every word it said, you just
noticed the thoughts were there; you didn’t heed its counsel,
you just let the thoughts pass?
There are objects floating through our consciousness at
all times. The ones we reach up, grab and cling to, are
the ones that best fit with our outlook on life. The more
we ruminate over these chosen thoughts, the stronger
they get, thus we believe they are ‘truth’.
Have you ever dated someone who was unpredictable
and constantly left you unsure? You probably spent a
lot of time thinking about them because you never knew
where you stood, right? You also probably gave that
person more attention than they deserved by all the
extra time you spent thinking about them. This gave you
a false view of the relationship, as in ‘I’m always thinking
about him/her so she must be special.’
What if you didn’t cling onto any unhelpful thoughts?
What if you just let them go? Would your mind be able to
torture you?
