Science project about hatching eggs wins first place at science fair.

On May 6th, 1963, countless hours of work and preparation were finally displayed at

Mayfield’s Science Fair. Each 8th grade student was assigned to create and display a science project at the fair, which took place in the gym.

With baking soda volcanoes, fossils, and many parents and students.

Although, the true star of the show was Juli Baker and her project: “A Chicken Is Born.” Her project followed the life cycle of a chicken; she documented the growth and development of six eggs. All six of her chicks hatched on the day of the science fair.

“When Mrs. Boobeth suggested that I hatch eggs for my science project, I was less than excited” Juli said. “-that is, until I saw my first sign of life.” After shining a light under the eggs, she had discovered the eggs’ embryos.

“Suddenly, it felt real” she said. “All the eggs were alive.”

At the fair, Juli was awarded the first place prize.

“It was cool,” she said, describing the experience. “But all I really cared about were my eggs.”

“She totally dominated the fair” said Bryce Loski.

After begging her mom for permission, Juli now raises her hens in her backyard and sells their eggs to her neighbours.

Mrs. Stewby (Juli’s neighbour) said “My book club members are always asking for the recipe to my deviled eggs. Farm fresh eggs really make a difference.”
