BURNS
A final higher-rep set. Example:
After pyramiding up to a six-rep
set of squats with 365 pounds,
reduce the weight to 225 and
finish with 20 reps. Reason: It’s
easier to eke out extra reps with a
lighter weight than a heavier one,
and this facilitates a nourishing
pump to the targeted muscles. Brief partial reps performed after
reaching full-rep failure. Example:
When you can’t get another rep
of calf raises, pump out as many
burns as you can in the midrange
of the movement. Reason: These
keep tension on the muscle
beyond where a set would usually
end. Advice: Burns work best
with isolation exercises and
should never be done with some
compound lifts, including deadlifts
and lunges.
