directly responsible for the increase of protein synthesis.
Here’ s the tricky part though … if your carb intake is too high, once your glycogen stores are full, insulin will then store the leftover glycogen as fat. The days of bulking up and becoming noticeably fat in the off-season are long gone!
A better understanding of nutrition
Today, we have a much better understanding of how the body works. A body grows muscle much faster on a lean physique.
In fact, if you get really fat it’ s extremely difficult to gain any muscle. Here’ s how it works … Muscle and fat both have receptors for insulin- the more muscle you carry the more receptors you have to store carbs as glycogen in the muscle. The more fat you carry, the more receptors you have to store fat.
When your body fat percentage gets to high, your body will favour fat storage by releasing more insulin. A fatter person could eat a 500-calorie meal and release more insulin than a lean person who eats the same meal.
The more insulin released, the more likely it is that you will store more fat.
So, the best way to grow lean muscle is to eat clean, but only eat sufficient carbs to grow without letting your body fat percentage get out of control.
For those of you who’ ve competed and got super lean, this is why after the show you can binge on junk food for weeks before you start getting fat. But then when you do start to gain fat- you gain fat quick.
Eat clean. Gain clean. Gain fast.
