especially when you are doing your comparisons in the center of the stage. Almost imagine your time on stage as one full performance, NEVER relax and always stand poised, you never know when you’ re being judged!
STEP 6.
Make your posing look natural and effortless, the key to mastering this is to start practicing as soon as possible. Approach posing practice like it’ s part of your training, start immediately and don’ t leave it till the last phase of your prep. This is where most competitors go wrong, they do all the training and the weeks of dieting but they then fail to perfect their posing and stage craft and as a result they don’ t present themselves well on stage. As a judge one of the most frustrating things is seeing an athlete with a stunning figure that doesn’ t know how to pose properly.
STEP 7.
Do your research, there’ s an abundance of information available on the internet and it’ s all at your fingertips. Watch previous competitions, learn what looks good on stage and what doesn’ t. Find
athletes that have a similar figure to you and try out poses that they are doing, I often spend hours on YouTube watching shows and learning from others. Also listen to the live commentary on shows it’ s an absolutely great way to pick up tips on what the judges want to see.
STEP 8.
Once you feel comfortable in your poses, you then need to stop practicing in the mirror. Remove it and replace it with your camera, record yourself doing your sessions and you will see so much more. You will see what you are doing wrong and right, I advise my clients to record, then watch it back and make notes and apply the notes to your next session. This is probably one of the best techniques to self-critique and improve.
STEP 9.
Make sure you stretch, posing is not easy in the slightest but you can make your body more mobile by stretching to allow yourself to manipulate your figure into better poses. Apply this at the beginning of each training session and you will see that your posing will improve, it’ s also great for muscle growth.

STEP 10.
Lastly practice your stage craft and presentation, remember you are showcasing yourself from the moment you step on stage, so practice in the studio from your walk on to your walk off, know what your first pose is going to be, practice so much that you get sick of posing and then practice some more.
