2017 KMA RESOLUTIONS

The KMA is resolved to support the continuation of federal funding for the Medicaid population , advocate for a focus on preventative care and support the AMA ’ s Vision of Health Reform as stated in its ’ November 15 , 2016 , document .

The KMA is resolved to communicate to the public the American Academy of Ophthalmology ’ s policies on eye safety .

The AMA Delegation Chair or designee will provide a summary of AMA activities at the KMA Annual Meeting .

On addiction and pregnancy , the KMA is resolved to oppose legislation that seeks to impose criminal liability related to maternal drug addiction during presidency or transplacental drug transfer , oppose legislation requiring physicians to gather and report private personal health information to law enforcement agencies related to maternal drug addiction during pregnancy or transplacental drug transfer , and provide info to increase knowledge regarding the effects of drug and alcohol use during pregnancy .

On evidence based treatment , the KMA is resolved to encourage policy-makers to pursue a medical and public health based approach to drug abuse , encourage the expansion of opioid maintenance medication programs , support treatment driven by patient needs and medical judgment , acknowledge the benefits of abstinence from or reduction of drug use , encourage the extensive application of needle and syringe exchange and distribution programs , support mental health and community partnerships and the efforts of mental health providers .

The KMA is resolved to support health care reform which meets the needs of Kentuckians and will advocate for the inclusion of full parity towards treatment equity of mental illness and substance abuse disorders .

The KMA is resolved to work with health systems and the electronic health records system to improve the medication process so the retail pharmacy receives a discontinuation notice when a patient ’ s prescription has been stopped .
