Incoming GLMS Vice President Wayne Tuckson, MD, was formally congratulated by the
Board as he will be receiving the Lyman T.
Johnson Leadership Award on May 19 (see
page 3).
•
The Board approved funding of a new program, Financial 101, for University of Louisville residents, which will invite first-year
residents and a guest to take a single day
course on how to manage budgets, organize
finances, consolidate loans, etc. “It’s a way
to engage those younger physicians in society,” said GLMS President-Elect John Roberts,
MD. “And those who sign up can hear a pitch
to join GLMS.” The Financial 101 program is
planned for late September 2016.

GLMS Treasurer Frank Burns, MD, recalled
the 2016 legislative session in Frankfort, saying, “It was amazing. We got the main bills we
were involved in passed, including Senate
Bills 17, 18, 19 and 20 which were all submitted by Senator Ralph Alvarado, MD, who
has been great to work with. For those of you
who ask what GLMS or KMA do for you, these
affect your everyday practice of medicine in
the state of Kentucky.”

There are currently 142 GLMS members who
have not paid outstanding dues and will be
dropped from membership and the roster
book if dues aren’t paid by June 3, 2016. If
you or a partner have not paid your annual
dues, this is your last opportunity. Please contact GLMS Membership Coordinator Jennifer
Howard at [email protected]. The
Board approved a motion to drop delinquent
dues members after one final notification.

The Board recognized several members who
are rotating off after the 2015-2016 year.
Among those are Board Chair Bruce Scott,
MD, Regi Varghese, MD, Secretary Tracy Ragland, MD, and outgoing GLMS Alliance President Karin Sonnier. With a strong thud from
the gavel, Dr. Scott transitioned his Board
Chair position to outgoing GLMS President
Robert Couch, MD, MBA. The ceremony for
incoming President John Roberts, MD, takes
place on Sunday, May 22 at The Healing Place
Women’s Campus.

GLMS and the GLMS Foundation each donated
$5,000 for a total of $10,000 to The Healing
Place in support of the wonderful work the
organization is doing to fight addiction in
Louisville. “What they’ve done is a model to
be replicated around the world,” said Board
Chair Bruce Scott, MD.
•
The Healing Place’s President Karyn Hascal shared information with the Board on a
newly opened center, Recovery on Chestnut.
The program is not a traditional THP model,
but rather a 30 day, non-medical re sidential program for addicts who can’t leave the
work force for a long term commitment. “It’s
a really valuable piece for this community,”
said Hascal. Entry in to the program is $5,000,
but Hascal informed the Board that other 30
day programs typically range from $30,00050,000. While Recovery on Chestnut is a men’s
facility, The Healing Place is currently looking
at a location for a women’s facility as well.

The Board welcomed a new member, Joann
Schulte, DO, the recently appointed director
of the Louisville Metro Dept. of Public Health &
Wellness. Dr. Schulte spoke on the continued
threat of the Zika virus and said, “We do have
a mosquito in Louisville which can carry the
Zika virus. We’re starting surveillance for that
now. We don’t necessarily expect Zika this
year, but we expect it will be here at some
point. I think we have a lot to learn about it.”
•
During the KMA Report, Executive Director
Pat Padgett spoke on the impact of the continued integration between the GLMS, KMA,
Lexington Medical Society and other medical
organizations. “All of these groups are working toward the same goal in the same way,
and they’re really starting to work together.
That has made an enormous difference,” he
said. “When Cory Meadows (KMA Director of
Advocacy) was running through the halls to
get the fair contracting bill passed, all of you
were a part of that moment. He was carrying
the ball but you all helped us get there.
