PULSE OF SURGERY CELEBRATES 5 YEARS
Physicians, hospital administrators and teachers recently gathered
at the Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart and Lung Center to celebrate five
years of success in the Pulse of Surgery program.
Pulse of Surgery has allowed more than 13,500 grade school children
to watch live open heart surgeries led by Mark Slaughter, MD, and
Kendra Grubb, MD. These physicians and their dedicated nursing
staff have encouraged Jefferson County students to explore the
possibilities of science and health care at a formidable age.
The Pulse of Surgery program was built on a partnership between
Jewish Hospital, the Kentucky Science Center and the Greater Louisville Medical Society. Together, the three organizations put into
motion an incredible resource allowing a look inside the world of
Louisville surgery.
“Our kids were getting to actually see inside the operating room, and
the passion of these physicians gives kids a broader understanding
of medicine,” said Dr. Grubb, who is often the designated speaker
inside the operating room, guiding viewers through what is actually
taking place and directing any questions they may have. “These kids
are at the perfect age where science and math aren’t ‘cool,’ but we
get to show them how cool science can be.”
GLMS Incoming Exec. Vice President/CEO Bert Guinn, MBA, CAE,
praised the programs ability to show Louisville children that health
care wasn’t an impossible dream. “It shows them, ‘You can do this.
You have to have patience and work really hard, but you can do this.’ ”
Members of the Pulse of Surgery staff were in
attendance at the July celebration.
One child said, “There was so much I learned in a matter of hours.
The amount of knowledge I gained was incredible.” Marilyn Bowman, science teacher at Mercy Academy encouraged the staff and
physicians to keep up the incredible work, saying, “The message
you’re trying to get to these kids: it’s working.”
To close the event, teachers whose classes had watched the event
spoke and offered first hand feedback of how children were effected.
