JOIN THE 2016 GLMS ESSAY CONTEST MEDICAL STUDENTS NEED YOUR GUIDANCE The ninth annual Richard Spear, MD, Memorial Essay Contest is upon us. GLMS welcomes all aspiring physician authors to take part and talk about their personal health care experiences for a chance at a cash prize. The contest is divided into two categories: practicing/retired physicians and in-training physicians/ medical students. After so many great essays last year, we can’t wait to read this year’s entries. Practicing and retired physicians are asked to write about how your practice has forged you as a person. Your theme is “How Medicine Has Changed Me” and the prize for first place is $1,500. For intraining physicians and medical students, consider your connection to the world at large both in-person and online. Your category, for a prize of $750, is “Social Media in Medicine.” Each entry in both categories will be considered on excellence in expression, creativity, readability and clarity by the all-volunteer panel of judges. Each entry must be between 800-2,000 words. The essays are due on Monday, March 7, 2016. The winning essays will be announced at the annual President’s Celebration in June and then published in the July 2016 issue of Louisville Medicine. Many of the other outstanding entries will be published in subsequent months as determined by the GLMS Editorial Board. For this contest, all entries must be original, unpublished writing intended solely for publication in Louisville Medicine and pertinent to the themes. Please remember HIPAA guidelines. Also, use a separate cover letter with your name, entry category, essay title and contact information as judges are blinded to authors. Send entries and cover letters via e-mail as an attachment to Aaron Burch at [email protected]. Email submissions are highly preferred, but if not possible, send entry by fax to (502) 736-6339 or by mail to GLMS, 101 W. Chestnut St., Louisville, KY, 40202. Please note that only GLMS members are eligible. Dr. Vinay Puri spoke with students at the 2015 Specialty Speed Networking event The Greater Louisville Medical Society’s Specialty Speed Networking event is back and in need of physician volunteers who are passionate about their specialty. This is a one-time volunteer commitment that exposes University of Louisville medical students to a variety of specialties through a format similar to “speed dating.” The event will be held at the Old Medical School Building on the evening of Thursday, March 10. Volunteers from the following physician specialties are requested: • yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy Anesthesiology Cardiology Emergency Medicine Internal Medicine (General Practice) Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Nephrology Neurology Obstetrics/Gynecology Oncology Ophthalmology Orthopedic Surgery Otolaryngology Pediatrics (General Practice or Subspecialty) Plastic Surgery Radiology Specialty Speed Networking is a popular event for the GLMS physicians and medical students who participate. Students spend several minutes at each specialty table speaking to the physician volunteer and rotate through all tables throughout the evening. The Leadership and Program Development Committee hosts the event, which is in its seventh year. To volunteer, contact Jennifer Howard at jennifer.howard@glms. org or 502-736-6362. Please be aware that GLMS only schedules one volunteer per specialty, therefore volunteers need to be sure they will be available before committing. GLMS NEWS DECEMBER 2015 3
