GOLF TOURNAMENT SOARS BY $100K IN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS NEW CMS LAB TEST FEE RULE NEEDS YOUR INPUT It has come to our attention that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin paying the same as private insurance rates for clinical diagnostic tests starting January 1, 2017, if a proposed rule change is approved. The proposed CMS rule would significantly revise the Medicare payment system for clinical diagnostic laboratory tests and implement other changes required by section 216 of the 2014 Protecting Access to Medicare Act. Reports indicated that Medicare has previously paid between 18 and 30 percent more than other insurers for some lab tests. The proposed move would generate $5.14 billion in savings for Medicare within the first 10 years of its implementation. Six scholarships were given out at this year’s golf outing. Physicians who have an opinion or comment about the rule change should submit their comments online at www.regulations.gov by following the “Submit a Comment” instructions. Physicians have until 5 p.m. on November 24, 2015, to submit their comments. The fifth annual GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament, which took place September 28 at Hurstbourne Country Club, passed a huge milestone this year. With $25,000 in GLMS Foundation scholarships given to dedicated medical students at the 2015 event, the total amount of scholarship awards given in just five years is now $105,000. Golfers and sponsors applauded the five recipients after a warm, cloudy day on the course. Numerous physicians were in attendance as well as community leaders from across Jefferson County. The five recipients of the scholarships were Elizabeth Bruenderman, Anna C. W. Hayes, Donald Herdt, Francesca Pribble Kingery and Elizabeth Veasey. The GLMS Alliance also awarded a $3,000 scholarship to medical student Evan B. Rhea. Overall, the event was a great success and planning is already underway for 2016. TALK FACE-TOFACE WITH THE PAYERS GLMS will be hosting a Multi-Payer Roundtable on Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 a.m. at the Old Medical School Building with representatives from Anthem, Kentucky Health Cooperative and United Healthcare. The purpose of this meeting is to facilitate dialogue between practices and payer representatives. The meeting will also include time for discussion of future opportunities with community-based physicians and post-implementation ICD-10 concerns. A light breakfast will be served.
