Treasurer Frank Burns, MD, spoke about the budget’s intentions before the board, saying, “This budget is designed to bring in as much non-dues revenue as possible. There have been no active dues increases in the last ten years.” The Board approved a recommendation from the Executive Committee for GLMS to provide $5,000 for a new Physician Wellness Program set to launch in 2016. The program would provide GLMS members an opportunity to seek and receive free, anonymous counseling from a psychology practice contracted by GLMS, which will pay for up to six counseling sessions. “We’ve all read information about physician stress and dissatisfaction. Across the country, there were 400 physician suicides last year. We think this is an important project to get behind,” said GLMS Board Chair Bruce Scott, MD. Look for more information about the program in the coming months. A sponsorship of $2,500 for The Healing Place’s Heroin Symposium was also approved by the GLMS Board. “The symposium is about what we can do as a community to focus on a heroin solution,” said The Healing Place President Karyn Hasca l. The symposium will include several guest speakers and a 12-step experience, which will dispel the myths surrounding the 12-step program. The symposium is all day on October 28 at the Marriott East. “We’ve had a great relationship with The Healing Place and consider this an important community need,” said Dr. Scott. Dr. Scott encouraged physicians to join the GLMS Wear the White Coat program which began October 14 at the Kentucky Science Center. Many in attendance said they’ve loved past years of the program. “I participated in the Wear the White Coat event a few years ago and it was a very profound experience for me. It was just phenomenal,” said Karyn Hascal. Sarah Moyer, MD, Medical Director for the Louisville Metro Dept. of Health & Wellness, asked GLMS to help get the word out about the department’s community health assessment. She also reported 92 overdoses so far in 2015. Also, a large percentage of users tested are found to have Hepatitis C. Fifty percent were already aware they have it, and approximately 40 percent of the remainder yy were found to have it as well. No cases of HIV have been discovered. KMA Executive Vice President Pat Padgett reported that attendance was up 50 percent at the annual KMA meeting which took place in August. Padgett also reported the Physician Leadership Academy, which took place at the annual meeting, was funded by a grant through the KMA Foundation. The grant allows for two more sessions to take place throughout the state. The cities of Bowling Green and London, KY, have been chosen.
