BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ HIGHLIGHTS
MAY 8, 2015
•
Dept. of Health and Wellness Interim Director Sarah Moyer, MD, updated the Board
on efforts to begin a needle exchange site in
Louisville. The organization hopes to have
the exchange open on 14th Street by June 1.
While there has not yet been an outbreak of
HIV in Louisville, southern Indiana has seen
over 150 new cases since January.
•
The Healing Place President Karyn Hascal
also gave an update related to the increasing use of heroin in Jefferson County. Hascal
reported The Healing Place is seeing more
addicts from southern Indiana and they have
begun sending residents to the health department for HIV testing. The new men’s campus
is expected to break ground in early autumn.
On July 22, 100 restaurants across Jefferson
County will donate 10 percent of their profits
to The Healing Place thanks to a new partnership with the Kentucky Restaurant Association. The Healing Place will also be hosting
a heroin symposium at the Marriott East on
October 28, 2015.

Dr. Burns commented on the 2015 state legislative session which saw several health care
related bills pass including the Good Samaritan Law and Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST). “The summer is a great time to
meet with your legislator,” he said. “Take them
out for coffee. Get to know them.”
•
Randy Schrodt, MD, praised the GLMS team
for their efforts in Frankfort and added that
the annual KMA meeting will begin on Friday,
August 28 and last through the weekend with
specialty society meetings held the following
Monday.
•
Changes to GLMS by-laws were approved
unanimously. One change regarding voting
procedures was tabled until after the new
2015-2016 officers begin their positions next
month.
•
Bruce Scott, MD, spoke briefly about the
federal repeal of the Sustainable Growth
Rate (SGR) which the AMA had long lobbied.
“It’s not the perfect bill, but the biggest thing
about it is that it moves the albatross from
around our necks. Every time we go to lobby
in Washington, the first thing on our list is
SGR. Now that it is off the list, we can move
on to other things.” Dr. Scott encouraged
physicians to visit the AMA website (www.
ama-assn.org) to learn more about the bill.

James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, presided
over his last GLMS Board of Governor’s meeting as board chair. His wife, Adele, was in attendance as he thanked physicians and staff
for what he described as the “most rewarding
period of my professional life.” Dr. Murphy
urged physicians involved with GLMS to stay
vigilant and optimistic, saying “The Greater
Louisville Medical Society. Our organization.
Our tribe. Our road to a place where medicine
is both science and art. Where our community enjoys wellness. And where the sacred
bond between the physician and the patient
is secure. I have imagined that future. I want
us to go there together. Let’s stay connected.
Let’s stay united. Let’s continue that journey,
together.”
