UNITED CAMPAIGN CONTINUED
and former addict, Josh, to talk about the benefits of THP and the
opportunities it can create for members of the Louisville community
in need of assistance.
“Being at The Healing Place saved my life,” Josh said. “I realized I
have limitations and I can’t do everything.” Josh will now join seven
other THP alumni to help set up a facility in Eastern Kentucky based
on The Healing Place model of peer involvement and accountability.
The Healing Place, originally founded by GLMS members, is the most
successful addiction recovery center in the country with an over 75
percent success rate. The organization, which charges no fees to
its clients, is looking to double coverage in the near future with the
construction of an expanded men’s campus.
“Addiction touches everyone,” Hascal said. “If it hasn’t touched someone you know personally, it’s touched you through our community.”
Meanwhile, the GLMS Foundation has dedicated itself to four initiatives which include medical student scholarships, medical missions,
preservation of The Old Medical School Building and supporting
community projects of the Medical Society.
Through the Annual Foundation Scholarship Golf Outing, $80,000
in scholarships have been awarded to promising medical students
over four years, with the fifth annual event scheduled for September
28, 2015.
With focus on local, regional & international missions, the Foundation is sponsoring an international trip to Managua, Nicaragua,

this month with a team of 22 physicians, nurses and volunteers. In
partnership with Hand in Hand Ministries, they will work to bring
medical care to the disadvantaged. For the first time, a psychiatric
team will also be in attendance including a psychiatrist, a psychiatric
RN and a child/adolescent psych resident.
The GLMS Foundation continues to preserve the Old Medical School
Building, home of the Medical Society, Foundation and the Wolf
Art Gallery. The building hosts countless events for both organizations including Match Day ceremonies for fourth year U of L Medical
Students, Specialty Speed Networking and numerous receptions,
meetings and charity events. The Old Medical School Building, home
of the original University of Louisville School of Medicine, provides
a link to our thriving medical community’s past, present and future.
“This is an exciting year for the Foundation,” said GLMS Foundation
Executive Director Terry Todd. “Our goals encompass improving
health care to the underserved in our local community; helping
reduce the overwhelming debt of young medical students and continuing to honor the legacy of the Louisville medical community
through Planned Giving and our Comprehensive Campaign.”
We invite all members to pledge their support to these two worthy
programs to strengthen the medical community in 2015 and beyond.

Campus at 502-585-4848. For more information regarding the GLMS
Foundation, contact Todd at 502-736-6356.
