Some of the most important issues he discussed were the KMA 2015 Legislative Agenda and the KMA’s 2015 Strategic Plan. For the short legislative session in Frankfort, Dr. Schrodt indicated the KMA would focus on four major issues: liability reform, preventing maintenance of certification from becoming part of licensure, curtailing mandatory issue specific CME and improving public health with an emphasis on decreasing smoking and prescription drug use. Dr. Schrodt also indicated the KMA will host its annual meeting on the weekend this year beginning Friday, August 28 and extending through early Monday for final specialty meetings. ADVERTISING: Cheri K. McGuire MEMBERSHIP STATUS Toni Ganzel, MD, Dean of UofL School of Medicine, told the board the University’s Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development program recently returned to full accreditation following a probation period regarding a physician’s conflict of interest. New policy has been put in place to safeguard against similar issues. Dr. Ganzel also reported great results in the first year integrated School of Medicine curriculum. The department has finalized a completely integrated second year across all disciplines. The reaccreditation site visit will take place May 10-13, 2015. yy GLMS President Bruce Scott, MD, reported on issues focused on by the American Medical Association. Dr. Scott indicated the AMA’s advocacy and legislative priorities were ICD-10, Meaningful Use policy, Sustainable Growth Rate and regulation of physician networks. yy Robert Couch, MD, MBA, GLMS PresidentElect and James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, Board Chair are joining the Kentucky Physicians Political Action Committee, replacing two long time members, David Watkins, MD, and Susan Bornstein, MD. “Dr. Watkins and Dr. Bornstein did an outstanding job and we appreciate all the work they did for KPPAC,” said Dr. Scott. yy LaQuandra Nesbitt, MD, MPH, attended her last GLMS Board of Governor’s meeting as she prepares to begin her new posi tion as Washington D.C. Health Director. The board presented Dr. Nesbitt with a plaque of recognition for her years of service in Louisville and wished her the best in her new role. “On behalf of the board, it’s been a real pleasure to have you here,” said James Patrick Murphy, MD, Board Chair. “You’re just the top of the shelf. I know you’re going to be so successful.” NEW DEATH REGISTRATION SYSTEM IN EFFECT Beginning January 1, 2015, all officials who handle death certificates are required to file information on the deceased electronically in a new Kentucky system. physicians and coroners. KY-EDRS statement of intent says it is designed to save time, enhance accuracy and improve the quality of death data received. The Kentucky Electronic Death Registration System (KY-EDRS) went into effect at the beginning of the year in an effort to phase out the old paperbased system used by the Office of Vital Statistics. The online program facilitates an easier collaboration among multiple death registration users including funeral homes, hospitals, nursing homes, The Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics has announced several training sessions on the program, available on their website, chfs.ky.gov/dph/vital/ ky-edrs.htm, along with more information on the program.
