MBA, KMA President Fred Williams, MD,
and GLMS Treasurer John Roberts, MD, welcomed incoming medical residents to the
University of Louisville on June 30, encouraging them to work hard and participate in the
professional relationship available through
GLMS and KMA. Following the orientation,
103 residents joined GLMS and KMA, up from
88 residents last year, a 15 percent increase.
Dr. Roberts noted few students and residents
were involved with GLMS, KMA and AMA other
than events specifically targeted at those
groups. Members of the board agreed designating a UofL faculty member to sponsor
and reinvigorate participation could make a
difference. John Kolter, MD, agreed to assist
in the outreach effort.
GLMS President Bruce Scott, MD, told the
board that the Physician Payments Sunshine
Act, the report of financial relationships between manufacturers and physicians, will be
released to the public at the end of September. Physicians have a limited time before
then to assess the reports and dispute any
they see fit via the Ce nters for Medicare &
Medicaid Services. (For more information,
see page 1).
Toni Ganzel, MD, UofL School of Medicine
Dean, informed the board she toured the
new instructional building currently under
construction. It is expected to be open and
operational in time for the start of the fall semester. Dr. Ganzel also said the Liaison Committee of Medical Education visited UofL in
June. She said the LCME was positive about
the action plans drafted and included feedback to further improve them. A plan will be
submitted to LCME in August and hopefully
endorsed in October with a site meeting to
follow in 2015. “We love the changes we are
seeing,” said Dr. Ganzel.
The GLMS Foundation recently met and revised their strategic plan. One notable change
was the addition of a goal for the GLMSF to
support community outreach programs of the
Greater Louisville Medical Society and work
closer with them to identify worthy projects.
The Healing Place will be celebrating
its 25th anniversary in August, culminating in a cocktail reception on Aug. 22 and
an alumni reunion on Aug 23. For information about upcoming events, visit

the GLMS Policy and Advocacy Team has had
success breaking into smaller workgroups
with direct focus on projects. Dr. Ragland encouraged members to take an interest in state
and federal politics, particularly those which
have an impact on the practice of medicine.
The P&A Team hopes to encourage a friendly
debate or dialogue regarding Kentucky health
care between Ky. State Representative John
Yarmuth and his challenger Michael Macfarlane, MD.
The GLMS Board approved the appointment
of Kenneth Henderson, MD, to the Judicial
Council.
KMA Exec. Vice President Patrick Padgett
informed GLMS that the American Medical
Association will no longer appear on the dues
bill sent to members. Padgett said both the
AMA and KMA had expressed interest in the
separation. Randy Schrodt, Jr., MD, KMA
Trustee explained, “It’s not due to a lack of
support for the AMA, but it did reflect a stickershock phenomenon when you get the bill.”
An appeals court recently upheld the ability
of physicians to provide expert review and
testimony in keeping with their full scope of
practice and training. Two physicians were
sued by the Kentucky Board of Chiropractic
Examiners for providing expert reviewing of
an accident victim’s chiropractic records.
The plaintiffs argued that only chiropractors
could review chiropractic analysis, citing a
state statute that limits peer review to other
chiropractors. The court of appeals noted the
difference between expert review and peer
review as a reason for the decision. (For more
information, see page 5).
The Emerging Medical Concepts Committee
recently asked focus groups for their opinions of GLMS and organized medicine. Their
responses largely fell into four categories:
education, business support, advocacy and
social aspects. The EMCC will be creating actionable steps based on the findings over the
next few months.
