BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ HIGHLIGHTS NOVEMBER 14, 2014 • The newest GLMS membership report showed a gain of 36 active members and a loss of six for a net gain of 30 members. GLMS currently has 1,999 active members and 3,707 total members. • Several GLMS physicians including Bruce Scott, MD, Robert Couch, MD, MBA, and Robert Zaring, MD, as well as GLMS Exec. Director Lelan Woodmansee attended the recent AMA meeting in Dallas. Dr. Zaring reported the AMA was hopeful progress could be made on several legislative issues including SGR and ICD 10. “During a lame duck session, both sides know there’s a problem, and there’s a lot they think they could do.” Dr. Zaring also reported that many AMA members were upset about Maintenance of Certification requirements, arguing that by putting an asterisk next to a physician’s degree it becomes devalued. You won’t get it sitting next to someone on an airplane. Thomas Reichard presented a scholarship check of $20,000 to Dr. Toni Ganzel for the four students honored at the 2014 GLMS Foundation Golf Outing who received their awards through the U of L School of Medicine. • GLMS Assoc. Exec. Director Bert Guinn, MBA, CAE, reported to the board the success of the 2014 Wear the White Coat Event. This year, 24 physicians paired with business leaders, state legislators, journalists and more to show them what a day as a physician was really like. Reactions from participants were overwhelmingly positive. In particular, State Senator Morgan McGarvey said his eyes were opened to the difficulty placed on physicians in complying with the different and complex varieties of insurance coverage. • GLMS Physician Education and Practice Support Director Jessica Williams gave an update on the Kentucky Health Benefits Exchange Update. For more information, see page 6. • GLMS Board Chair James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, announced the next OPIOID Course will be held Feb. 6-8, 2015. • The next meeting of the GLMS Board of Governors will be held January 9, 2015. U of L School of Medicine Dean Toni Ganzel, MD, told the GLMS Board of Governor’s that the school’s next site visit for accreditation confirmation will take place May 10-13, 2015, and the school is on track to meet all requirements.
