Like its predecessor, the e. MAS 5 is known as another Geely car, the Geely Xingyuan, in overseas markets. The e. MAS 5 model was revealed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in during the 47th ASEAN Summit in 2025.

Fellow Malaysian automaker Perodua is 10 years Proton’ s junior and was founded in 1993 as a private entity. It debuted in the Malaysian market in 1994 with the Perodua Kancil, a 5-door hatchback.
Since its inception, Perodua and Daihatsu have shared a close relationship. Daihatsu owned 20 per cent stake and ultimately increased it over time to 20 per cent in 2001 and finally 35 per cent. Perodua uses Daihatsu’ s designs, engines, and transmissions.
