2025 Car Sales Round-Up: Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a fast-growing market for the automotive industry. Several developments from some of its biggest brands like VinFast and Proton have made waves worldwide and more importantly, within their own countries.
While each country faced different economic circumstances in 2025, electric vehicles( EVs) have remained a growing trend within the region regardless. Let’ s take a look at the performance of some Southeast Asian countries in 2025.
INDONESIA
This year, Indonesia hoped to improve its performance in vehicle sales. While the tail-end of 2025 showed positive results, Indonesia’ s total industry volume( TIV) for 2025 reached 803,687 units, 7 per cent down year-on-year( YoY).
Japanese brands remained strong as it dominated the top 10 best-selling brands of the year, apart from Chery, Hyundai, and BYD. Though, the collective performance of Japanese brands in the Indonesian car market shows waning interest from consumers. Contrastingly, Chery and BYD’ s performances show a strong, growing interest for Chinese car brands, specifically for new energy vehicles( NEVs).
Toyota and its subsidiary Daihatsu remained Indonesia’ s best-selling brand despite the entry of NEVs into the market. Toyota sold 250,431 units for the year, while Daihatsu sold 130,677 units. The former took majority of the market share at 31.2 per cent, while Daihatsu’ s share was 16.3 per cent. Comparing sales from 2024, both brands face double-digit declines; Toyota, down by 13.3 per cent and Daihatsu, down by 19.8 per cent.
Fellow Japanese automaker Mitsubishi sold a little more than half of Daihatsu with 71,781 units, dipping slightly by 0.6 per cent. Despite this, Mitsubishi acquired 8.9 per cent market share.
Suzuki performed similarly with overall sales amounting to 66,345 units, dipping slightly by 0.7 per cent. It acquired 8.3 per cent of the market for 2025.
Honda rounded out the top 5, both monthly and yearly sales dipping by 61.9 per cent and 40.4 per cent respectively. For the year 2025, Honda sold 56,500 vehicles overall and acquired 7 per cent market share.
BYD made a staggering improvement of 202.7 per cent compared to 2024. Though barely breaching the top 6, the EV maker is on a steady rise in Indonesia. The brand sold 46,711 units during the year and acquired 5.8 per cent market share within one year of its Indonesian debut.
Mitsubishi Fuso, the commercial vehicle arm of Mitsubishi, join its parent company in the top 10. It sold a total of 25,235 vehicles in 2025 and
