identify and address safety risks too. A plan should define the controls for all identified risks on a journey, including: route, timing, rest breaks, and security arrangements if necessary.
There are many examples of organisations implementing a range of measures to encourage safe and sustainable journeys. Each year Brake holds the Australasian Fleet Champions Awards, celebrating organisations working to reduce incidents involving at-work drivers and vehicles. The Sustainable Journeys Award recognises organisations that have worked to reduce road risk and fuel emissions whether through travel planning, promoting alternative transport choices, or using more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Last year’ s winner was Tranzit Group, who launched Australasia’ s first 100 % zero emission public transport fleet into Palmerston North, New Zealand, with Horizons Regional Council. Other previous winners have included Queenstown Lakes District Council, who significantly reduced its emissions by switching to electric vehicles, future-proofing charging infrastructure, and including both e-bikes and standard bikes in its fleet to provide active and sustainable transport alternatives for staff.
Entries and nominations are being invited for the 2025 Australasian Fleet Champions Awards, sponsored by AutoSense. The closing date is Friday 18 July. Find out more at https:// globalfleetchampions. org / fleet-championsawards / australasia-awards /.
