WHAT CAN SEA DO?
Southeast Asia rose as a key market in the global EV shift because of its location and resources. Multinational companies and legacy automakers have partnered with several of its governments to fast-track its efforts towards sustainability and economic growth.
Overall, the Southeast Asian region’ s EV adoption rate is not as notable as that of North America or Europe. Though ASEAN’ s member-states are making notable strides to increase EV adoption, fiscal policies can only go so far. A hefty price tag on an EV is only one factor, concerns regarding infrastructure and range anxiety also impact consumer decision.
A study conducted in 2024 found that supplementary policies and infrastructure must be developed to encourage EV adoption. Though the study is based on data from Indonesia, its findings can be applied to fellow Southeast Asian nations. Most of the aforementioned countries have introduced tax incentives to encourage EV adoption, but not all have installed complementary infrastructure.
Not only should efforts come from governments and public organisations, but private companies and manufacturers as well. Additionally, the study emphasised increasing public awareness of not just the concept of EVs, but also its benefits for both the individual drivers and the larger community.
Low awareness of EVs in the region can be amended by aggressive marketing and informational campaigns from OEMs. The study previously mentioned underscored the importance of psychological factors in the US’ adoption of EVs, as American citizens are highly aware of EVs and their benefits.
In conclusion, accessibility and awareness are key to EV transition in the region. Both factors can be achieved through policy and partnerships with domestic and overseas corporations.
