EKAMVA DEBUTS IN JOHANNESBURG
TATA MOTORS ’ RATAN TATA DIES AT 86
Donald Trump will return to the White House as the USA ’ s next president in January 2025 . The returning ex-president vowed to increase tariffs during his campaign period , causing a wave of uncertainty across the US ’ automotive sector . Trump ’ s vow specifically includes a 25 per cent tariff for imports from Canada and Mexico and 10 per cent for products from China .
Sources report that Trump may repeal incumbent US President Joe Biden ’ s emission policies . Earlier this year , the Biden administration released the US ’ “ strictest regulation on vehicle exhaust emissions ever introduced .” The incumbent president enacted this regulation to aid the country ’ s shift to EVs with a goal of 56 per cent of cars to be electric by 2032 .
Unfortunately for environment enthusiasts , President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to repeal this regulation when he re-enters office in January . Trump ’ s camp criticised Biden ’ s emissions policy as “[ forcing ] Americans to buy ultra-expensive cars they do not want and cannot afford while destroying the US auto industry in the process .” The US has yet to see if former President Trump will keep his word come next year .
South African fleet start-up GoMetro debuted the eKamva to answer for the lack of public transportation in the country . The eKamva is a fifteen-seat electric vehicle with a range of 200 km when fully charged . Its fast-charging capabilities allow the vehicle to be fully charged within 75 minutes . The vehicle is named after the word , “ ikamva ,” a Xhosa word that means “ into the future .”
Currently , South Africa ’ s public transportation is dominated by minibus taxis . These taxis are conventional ICE vehicles that emit “ an estimated 30 million tons of carbon dioxide per year .” Hence , GoMetro saw the need to produce EVs , which are considered zeroemission vehicles .
GoMetro , in partnership with PowerFleet , ACDC Dynamics , and the Engineering Faculty of Stellenbosch University are set to install a network of EV chargers for the eKamva across Cape Town within the year .
The man behind Tata Group and one of India ’ s richest men , Ratan Tata died last October 9 . Tata was the man behind Tata Motors ’ acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008 , a move that put Tata Motors on the global stage .
The business tycoon is most remembered for establishing Tata Motors , one of India ’ s local car manufacturers . During his time at Tata Motors , Ratan Tata and company released the Tata Sumo , Tata Safari , Tata Nano , Indigo CS , and many more . Of his many contributions to India ’ s automotive sector is the creation of the Tata Sierra , India ’ s first locally manufactured SUV .
Tata ’ s wake was held in Mumbai and was attended by thousands , including politicians , celebrities , and his fellow businessmen .
