FLEETDRIVE
Move over , T . A . R . D . I . S .! The DeLorean Time Machine competes with the Doctors ’ phone booth as the most famous time machine in pop culture . Originally conceptualised as a timetraveling refrigerator , the writing team pivoted to the DeLorean during development .
PUT ON YOUR RADIATION SUIT
So , what does it take to go back to the future ? Just a few things , like :
Flux capacitor – The secret to time-travel . It allows the car to journey through time when accelerated at exactly 88 miles per hour ( 142 kilometres per hour ).
Plutonium-powered electronic engine – Wait — the DeLorean is an EV ? Sure is ! Doc modified this car to run on electricity ( 1.21 gigawatts needed ) generated by plutonium . Vastly different from a MINI Cooper Electric .
Stainless steel frame – Doc Brown built his baby to stand the test of time and freezing temperatures . Its body is so strong that it stayed intact while Einstein , Doc ’ s pet dog , remained completely unharmed inside .
Time circuits – In its console , the car ’ s time circuits indicated present time , destination time , and the last time departed .
Gale explained that the rationale for choosing the DeLorean was that it was an unconventional car . As Doc Brown says , “ If you ’ re going to build a time machine into a car , why not do it with style !”
While it was a 1981 DeLorean on the outside , the car featured in the film was a mishmash of different vehicle parts inside . Its engine took from leftover helicopter parts , while its speedometer was completely custom-made . Speedometers at that time could only show up to 85 mph , so the production crew created one that measured up to 95 mph .
Speaking of speed , the DeLorean was not as fast in real life . The film ’ s stunt crew reportedly found it difficult to accelerate to that speed . As the DeLorean was mostly cosmetic , sound effects were added into the film to make the car appear powerful .
Fun fact : Back to The Future used three DeLoreans . One of them was spliced and taken apart to film the interiors properly . Otherwise , a Hollywood camera would not have been able to film inside .
GREAT SCOTT , IT ’ S REAL !
Many thought the DeLorean was created solely for the film , but in actuality , the car was made by the now-defunct DeLorean Motor Company ( DMC ). DMC declared bankruptcy in 1982 , near the conception of Back to The Future , and after completing their only model , the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 . Writer and producer Bob
