Transforming Logan City Council ’ s Fleet

WORDS BY LOGAN CITY COUNCIL

We didn ’ t just hit our target of 50 % of fleet of passenger vehicles being hybrid or EV , we smashed the target two years early . This was a great achievement for the team , and it sets the platform for further change and innovation within our fleet .

Our environmental journey began pre-covid when we started developing what became the Logan City Council 2021-26 Green Fleet Strategy . The Plant Fleet Services Branch worked on this document in consultation with other parts of Council including the Environment team and the organisation ’ s Executive Leadership Team . This allowed us to collate an ambitious yet achievable set of targets and actions for inclusion in the Strategy .
Some of our early actions were related to our workshop building . We installed 100 kilowatts of solar on the roof , installed a small battery to provide the workshop with solar power overnight , and moved entirely to LED lighting . Then we began to focus on our fleet .
A portion of our passenger fleet is made up of vehicles that staff lease from Council . These are cars which are taken home overnight but are used as part of the delivery of each officer ’ s role during the day . Staff can choose which model of car they want , but only from a limited list that we provide . Given the Strategy sets a 50 % hybrid / EV passenger vehicle fleet target , we made hybrids an attractive option on this lease list . This really helped to increase hybrid uptake by staff . We ’ ve now hit the target two years early .
