Sustainable Practices and Materials in Car Manufacturing

WORDS BY ANBY ALCOMENDAS

Responding to the urgent need for environmental responsibility , the automotive industry has been taking strides towards sustainability . Apart from the adoption of electric vehicles ( EV ), many manufacturers are turning to sustainable practices that seek to reduce the industry ’ s carbon emissions , help to minimise the waste it produces , limit the resources it uses for daily operations , and cut the use of nonrenewable resources .

Let ’ s dive into the sustainability trends in automotive materials and practices and explore how the industry is embracing change to create a more eco-friendly and efficient future .
Alternative Materials for Car Parts
Steel , rubber , plastics , and aluminium are the core materials used in vehicle construction due to their strength , durability , and cost-effectiveness . However , in the last few years the industry has been turning to alternative materials for producing vehicles to reduce their caron footprint and to create vehicles that are more environmentally friendly throughout their life cycle .
The industry has been exploring the use of lightweight materials to complement and even replace steel . Aluminium , which has remarkable strength-to-weight ratio , is being used for body panels and chassis parts . High-strength steel alloys are also gaining popularity , offering durability without the weight penalty . Composites , made from a combination of materials like carbon fibre and polymers , provide an additional avenue for weight reduction while maintaining structural integrity .
