TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN FLEET MANAGEMENT :

GAINING NEW INSIGHTS THROUGH DATA

WORDS BY JOHAN FORSEKE , GREATER THAN

Fleets have been embracing technological developments for some time now and are reaping the benefits of connected fleet management . But technology doesn ’ t stand still , and the opportunities set to arise in 2024 could be transformative across the industry . This article explores how the latest innovations in artificial intelligence ( AI ) data analytics are helping fleet managers get ahead of the game in some of the most pressing areas of fleet management today .

Sustainability management
Fleet sustainability is high on the business agenda due to the growing need for organisations to reduce their carbon footprint . A sustainable fleet strategy can deliver many benefits , including reduced emissions , improved fuel efficiency , and lower operational and maintenance costs . Data analytics enables fleet managers to gain deeper climate impact insights than ever before . For example , they can identify driver and fleet CO2 emissions , including average emissions per driver / vehicle , as well as savings over time due to interventions such as eco training .
ESG reporting
This year , Environmental , Social & Governance ( ESG ) reporting regulations apply to more companies than ever before . And , even if your company is not yet subject to reporting requirements , sustainability pressure is ramping up from customers , supply chain partners , investors , and employees . With data analytics , your fleet ’ s sustainability performance data , including CO2 emissions and savings , can be easily collated into sustainability reports , supporting transparency , benchmarking , target setting and reporting .
Supply chain decarbonisation
Many of the world ’ s largest companies having pledged net zero targets . To achieve these , they are not only examining how to reduce their own CO2 emissions , but those of their supply chain partners too . This means that , for fleets , there will be growing pressure to measure and reduce emissions , and to share ESG reporting data . Again , by utilising the latest in data analytics , fleets can demonstrate their efforts in managing emissions and can quantify climate impact to help their supply chain partners work towards their net zero goals .
Crash prediction
Data analytics takes driver safety management to another level . Using only GPS data , it ’ s now possible for fleet managers to identify the drivers most likely to crash , and why . When integrated into existing telematics solutions , AI data analytics can add an additional layer of risk insights by analysing driving behaviour on a per-second level . Not only does this help fleets to reduce crashes , but demonstrating a strong commitment to driver safety can help to secure accurate insurance pricing .
Targeted training
Driver training can have its challenges for fleet operators , including costs , administrative effort , and driver downtime . With data analytics , fleets can increase the efficiency of driver training by delivering it promptly to those who need it . Data analytics can convert GPS data into a “ crash probability ” score for drivers , making it easy for fleets to identify the drivers most in need of training , and in which areas . Considering that risk status constantly evolves , using AI to identify risk level in real time means fleets can be proactive in delivering training to support a predict and prevent approach to safety .
Final words
Thanks to developments in technology , telematics and fleet management companies can now provide next-generation solutions that leverage the latest in AI data analytics to enhance crash prevention , CO2 reductions , operational efficiency , and cost savings .
