Examining tipping points for mainstream EV adoption amongst fleet managers
WORDS BY BP
, through its premium oil brand Castrol , bp conducted a study of eight major EV markets globally , ( UK , US , China , France , Germany , India , Japan and Norway ) examining tipping points for accelerating adoption of EVs . In total , 750 fleet and transport managers were asked for their views – here is what they had to say :
1 . Range ranked the # 1 barrier amongst fleet managers , with 61 % stating they would only consider purchasing an EV when a distance of 550km can be travelled between charges . Automotive professionals confirm that they can currently achieve an average range 397km . This is just 72km less than the customer tipping point and 153km less than that of fleet managers .
2 . Fleet managers ranked vehicle choice # 2 , requiring modes of transport which suit precise business needs , whether that be specialist vans for trade companies or luxury models for executives . 53 % of fleet managers said they would consider purchasing an EV if a model equivalent to their favorite ICE vehicle was available .
3 . Strong and reliable infrastructure is seen as a critical challenge amongst fleet managers and consumers alike , with 70 % of consumers believing that most new car sales will be fully electric when charging infrastructure is as accessible as service stations .
4 . Price ranked # 4 amongst fleet managers with an average tipping point of US $ 49,500 . Whilst less price sensitive than consumers , we do see a variation in sensitivity among fleet managers themselves based on business activity .
5 . Fleet managers ranked charge time # 5 as charging can be provided on business premises . On average fleet managers are
prepared to wait 36 minutes for their fleet vehicle to charge , a full 5 minutes longer than the average consumer .
The automotive industry faces many critical challenges on its journey to mainstream EV adoption . Consequently , bringing down costs and charge time while increasing driving range , charging infrastructure and vehicle choice will be critical in accelerating the EVolution and persuading fleet managers to make the switch to EVs .
