One way to engage workers with road safety is to pilot a road safety campaign , utilising some of the resources outlined above . As you start to get ‘ runs on the board ’, build regular toolbox talks and other content into an ongoing focus , making the toolbox talk into a safety conversation and a regular touch point covering topics aligned with claims data and suggestions from your own workers . Make information easily accessible , on your intranet for example , and regularly feature toolbox talks and training materials and frequently update with new and engaging content .
Remember to take the whole workforce on the journey with you , resisting the temptation to ‘ point the finger ’ at those responsible for the highest volume of incidents . Over time , these data driven workplace road safety conversations become the new habit .
What ’ s the evidence this works ? Sounds simple , but it can work .
In fact , this is what one company did over the past 12 months or so . The above are all real examples from their journey and how they created workplace road safety habits and built a safe driving culture .
As a soon-to-released NRSPP case study says :
“… within 12 months [ they ] had reduced both the number of incidents and direct costs by about a third . The result has contributed to the ongoing safety culture and [ its ] peers are now asking its advice on how to address similar issues .”
So , what is your organisation ’ s workplace road safety New Year ’ s resolution ?
