Maintenance

A 4 Step Approach

WORDS BY STEVE BOYCE

If you are already involved managing complex

high value assets , such as trucks , trailers , plant , and equipment , then you already know the importance of an effective Maintenance program .
Failing to implement an effective Maintenance program can lead to unsafe assets , high maintenance and fuel costs and poor reliability resulting in lost productivity . Ineffective maintenance practices can also lead to regulatory compliance breaches that could result in personal fines and even imprisonment in some circumstances .
In this article I have summarised a 4-step approach for consideration to implement a best practice Maintenance program . Maintenance and Fleet Managers can use this guide when implementing or improving upon their own fleet maintenance practices .
Step 1 - Display Leadership through planning
Failing to plan is planning to fail . This is true when it comes to implementing a Maintenance program . It is imperative that a clear plan is established ensuring that it is aligned to your organisational strategies and objectives .
Key considerations :
• Develop Strategic Objectives for your Maintenance program – Fleet wide strategic objectives , action plans and budget forecasts should be developed . Think of this as a roadmap to set direction and focus the energies of employees and stakeholders who have responsibilities within the Maintenance program .
