Nikita Kroutchev and Kennedy during the Cuba crisis in 1962
Today , as the fighting intensifies in Ukraine , in Western chancelleries , some speak cynically of the right of the Ukrainian people , to dispose of themselves and their territory , and to choose their allies themselves ; yet in the facts , any Ukrainian leader who would have taken a dim view of NATO membership would have been called pro-Moscow , and would have su ered coups fomented against him , as was the case with the Orange Revolution in 2004 or Euromaidan in 2014 . Ukraine ' s history of political instability demonstrates that there has always been Western and Russian intent to manipulate the outcome of elections in Ukraine . The country bordering Russia , has always been seen as an essential pawn in the geostrategic agendas of Washington , which relies on its satellite countries in Western and Northern Europe to implement its policy of domination .
If the Westerners were so concerned about the wellbeing of the Ukrainian populations , they would not have sold NATO to them , but rather the transfer of technologies , investment in their agricultural sector and an industrialization , consistent with the potential of Ukraine which in the top Five of the wheat exporting countries has 22.9 million hectares of arable land , of which nearly 2,454,000 are irrigated . Instead , westerners enlisted an entire nation into a fight that is not theirs . An Independent Ukraine should have moved away from Western sirens who wanted nothing else but to become the new mackerel replacing the Soviet Union .
